The Scene: In this evocative study of light and motion, a fine veil of sand cascades from a sunlit rock ledge into the obsidian darkness of a canyon floor. The "sandfall" is perfectly illuminated by a narrow shaft of light, making each grain appear like liquid gold against the pitch-black surroundings. Above, the textured sandstone shelf is bathed in a soft, ethereal light, while the landing point on the ground creates a warm, circular spotlight that reveals the gritty detail of the canyon floor.

Artistic Note: This photograph captures the concept of ephemerality within the eternal. The use of a slightly longer shutter speed softens the falling sand, giving it a silken, fluid appearance that contrasts with the hard, unyielding nature of the rock. The extreme use of negative space focuses all of the viewer's attention on the delicate vertical lines of the sandfall. It is a highly meditative piece that emphasizes the quiet, constant transformations occurring in nature's most secluded places.
